Jacky Terrasson, le plus voyageur des pianistes de jazz, est “un pianiste du bonheur” (Telerama). Il fait partie de ces musiciens jubilatoires, capables de transporter son public vers l’euphorie.

Né à Berlin en 1965, d’une mère américaine et d’un père français, il grandit à Paris. Il débute le piano à l’âge de 5 ans et après des études de piano classiques au Lycée, il étudie le jazz notamment avec Jeff Gardner. Sa rencontre avec Francis Paudras (dont le film «Round Midnight» raconte son émouvante rencontre avec Bud Powell) constitueront une étape importante dans son parcours initiatique du jazz. Jacky part alors aux Etats-Unis pour le Berklee College Of Music. En 1993, Il remporte le prestigieux concours Thelonious Monk et part en tournée avec Betty Carter. Il décide d’habiter à New York où il réside encore aujourd’hui.

Un an exactement après son triomphe au concours Thelonious Monk, Jacky Terrasson est présenté dans le New York Times magazine comme “l’un des trente artistes susceptibles de changer la culture américaine dans les trente prochaines années” et signe avec le prestigieux label Blue Note.

Il réalise ces trois premiers disques en trio pour le label Blue Note (Jacky Terrasson, Reach, Alive). Puis il s’adonne à plusieurs collaborations: «  Rendez-vous » avec Cassandra Wilson, «What it is » au côté de Michael Brecker et Mino Cinelu. A partir de 2001, il enregistre pour le label Blue Note: “A Paris” – interpretation presonnelle de standards de la chanson francaise), “Smile” (Meilleur album Jazz de l’année aux Victoires du Jazz en 2003 et Django d’or), et l’album solo “Mirror”.

Ce franco-américain n’a cessé au cours de sa carrière de nous enthousiasmer : par ses prestigieuses collaborations (Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, Jimmy Scott, Charles Aznavour, Ry Cooder...), par sa musique minimaliste et énergique forgée avec le batteur Leon Parker et le bassist Ugonna Okegwo à la basse – un trio considéré comme l’un des meilleurs trio de jazz des années 90… Et par cette intuition, cette ouverture à la découverte des futurs talents dans ses nombreux groupes (citons Eric Harland, Ben Williams, Jamire Williams, Justin Faulkner).

En Février 2012, Jacky Terrasson signe avec Universal Jazz France. Son premier disque “Gouache” sortira à l’Automne, une célébration joyeuse de ses 20 ans de carrière. Il y est entouré de la fine fleur de la jeune génération jazz new-yorkaise ainsi que de Michel Portal, Stephane Belmondo, Minino Garay et la chanteuse Cecile McLorin-Salvant.

Il se produit régulièrement en solo et en trio dans les plus grands festivals de Jazz (Montreal, San Francisco, Montreux, North Sea Jazz, Marciac), dans les plus prestigieux festivals de piano (Klavier Ruhr Festival, Lucerne, La Roque d’Anthéron, Piano aux Jacobins). Il joue régulièrement en Asie (principalement au Japon, en Corée du Sud et en Chine), en Europe et aux Etats-Unis.

Pour décrire son jeu, on cite à son égard Bud Powell pour sa vélocité soigneusement contrôlée, Ahmad Jamal pour son sens de la respiration mais aussi sa connaissance des compositeurs savants francais (Ravel, Fauré, Debussy). Fondant sous ses doigts les inventions et les couleurs des plus grands pianistes d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, il a créé son propre style, tout en subtilité, fraîcheur, aisance et désir de réinventer, encore et toujours.

En 2014, Jacky signe sur le label Impulse! et sort un opus festif “Take This”, avec un solide trio américain et quelques invités spécialement choisis comme Sly Johnson (beatbox) et Adama Diarra (percusionniste). Le disque sera nominé aux Victoires du Jazz, dans la catégorie Meilleur Album Jazz de l’Année.

En 2015, il devient l’ambassadeur Musical des Champagnes Krug, pour une tournée prestigieuse de dégustations musicales qui le conduira à Berlin, Rome, Londres, San Francisco, Hong-Kong et Tokyo. C’est aussi l’année de la consécration avec un concert à L’Olympia, accompagné de tous ses amis dont Stephane Belmondo, Marcio Faraco, Minino Garay, et les chanteuses Cecile McLorin, Mathilde et Anne Sila.

En 2016, Jacky retrouve son ami de 30 ans Stephane Belmondo pour enregistrer “Mother”, le deuxième disque sur le label Impulse! produit par Jean-Philippe Allard. Un duo facétieux, intime et complice.

En 2019, Jacky sort "53" et signe son grand retour sur le mythique Label Blue Note, dans son format de prédilection en trio. En Décembre 2021, il se produit à l'Opéra de Bordeaux et offre au public bordelais la première interprétation en symphonique de 53 avec l'Orchestre National de Bordeaux dirigé par Bastien Stil.

En 2023, Jacky Terrasson crée son propre label "Earth-Sounds" et enregistre son nouvel album "Moving On" qui sortira le 19 Avril 2024.

Jacky Terrasson, the most widely travelled of all jazz pianists, is the “piano player of happiness”, according to Telerama magazine in France. He is an exhilarating musician, one of those who play their public straight to euphoria.

Born in Berlin, of an American mother and a French father, he grew up in France, in Paris. He started to learn the piano when was 5 and after studying classical piano in school, he began to study jazz, in particular with Jeff Gardner. His encounter with Francis Paudras (whose movie, “Round Midnight”, tells the moving story of a lasting friendship with Bud Powell) will be an important part of his initiation in jazz. Jacky then leaves for the United States to attend the Berklee College of Music. In 1993, after he wins the prestigious Thelonius Monk Award, he begins touring with Betty Carter. He then decides to move to New York, where he still lives today.

Exactly one year after his triumph in the Thelonius Monk competition, Jacky Terrasson was introduced in the New York Times Magazine as one of the 30 under 30, that is to say one of the 30 artists most likely to change American culture in the next 30 years, and signed with the prestigious Blue Note label.

He made three first trio recordings for Blue Note (Jacky Terrasson, Reach, and Alive). He then devoted himself to several collaborations: “Rendezvous”, with Cassandra Wilson, and “What it is”, with Michael Brecker and Mino Cinelu. Beginning in 2001, he records “A Paris” for Blue Note, a very personal interpretation of classics of French song; “Smile”, (winning him Best Jazz Album of the Year, 2003 Victoires du Jazz and a Gold Django), and finally a solo album, “Mirror”.

This Franco-American national has never stopped dazzling us, either by his prestigious collaborations, with greats such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, Jimmy Scott, Charles Aznavour, Ry Cooder… or with his minimalist and energetic music hammered out with drummer Leon Parker and bassist Ugonna Okegwo, in a trio that was considered one of the best jazz trios of the 90s. And this intuition, this instinct, this openness, leads him to the discovery of the great burgeoning talents of his many groups (talents such as those of Eric Harland, Ben Williams, Jamire Williams, and Justin Faulkner).

In February 2012, Jacky Terrasson signed with Universal Jazz France. His first recording, “Gouache”, will appear in Fall 2012, and it is a joyous celebration of his 20-year career. In this recording, he is surrounded by the pride of the upcoming New York jazz generation, but also by Michel Portal, Stéphane Belmondo, Minino Garay, and singer Cecile McLorin-Salvant.

He performs regularly in solo and in trio in the great jazz festivals (Montreal, San Francisco, Montreux, North Sea Jazz, Marciac); and in the most prestigious Piano festivals (Klavier Ruhr Festival, Lucerne, La Roque d’Anthéron, Piano aux Jacobins). He also plays regularly in Asia, mostly in Japan, South Korea and in China, in Europe and the United States.

If we were to describe his playing, we would compare Jacky Terrasson to Bud Powell for his carefully controlled velocity on the piano keys, to Ahmad Jamal for his sense of phrasing, but also for his knowledge of the great French composers savants, such as Ravel, Fauré and Debussy. Through his fingers, as he mingles and melts the colors and the inventions of the great pianists of yesterday and today, Jacky creates his own style, all in subtleties, freshness, facility and ease, with the desire to rewrite and reinvent, again, every day and forever.

In 2015, Jacky Terrasson signed with the prestigious label Impulse! and released “Take This”. He is also the musical Ambassador for Krug’s Champaign and will tour worldwide for an unique journey and experience that pairs Musi and Champaign.

In 2016, Jacky releases “Mother” on Impulse! with his long-time partner and friend, the trumpet player Stephane Belmondo.

Jacky Terrasson ist, so steht es in der der französischen Wochenzeitschrift Telerama, ein « Pianist des Glücks ». Mit seiner Improvisationslust, Lebensfreude und Spontaneität gelingt es diesem ausserordentlichen Jazz-Interpreten und Komponisten, sein Publikum total zu begeistern.

Jacques-Laurent Terrasson wurde 1965 als Sohn einer Afro-Amerikanerin und eines Franzosen in Berlin geboren und wuchs in Paris auf. Mit dem Klavierspiel fing er mit 5 Jahren an, studierte während seiner Schuljahre zuerst klassische Klaviermusik, für die er eine grosse Begabung zeigte, und danach Jazz mit Jeff Gardner. Sein Zusammentreffen mit Francis Paudras (dessen Film „Round Midnight“ ein emotionales Treffen mit Bud Powell beschreibt) war eine wichtige Etappe für Jacky in seinen Anfängen im Jazz. 1986 verlässt er Paris, um am Berklee College of Music zu studieren. 1993 gewinnt Jacky Terrasson den renommierten Thelonious-Monk-Wettbewerb als talentiertester Jazz-Pianist des Jahres und geht mit Betty Carter auf Tournee. Er entschliesst sich, sich in New York anzusiedeln, wo er noch heute lebt.
Genau ein Jahr nach seinem Triumph beim Thelonius-Monk-Wettbewerb wird Jacky Terrasson vom New York Times Magazin als einer der « 30 Künstler, die das Potenzial haben, die amerikanische Kultur in den nächsten 30 Jahren zu verändern“ designiert. Er bekommt einen Vertrag bei dem hoch angesehenen US label Blue Note.
Seine drei ersten Aufnahmen für Blue Note in Trio-Formation sind „Jacky Terrasson“, „Reach“ und „Alive“. Es folgen verschiedene Kollaborationen, wie „Rendez-vous“ mit Cassandra Wilson und „What it is“ mit Michael Brecker und Mino Cinelu. Ab 2001 nimmt der Pianist für die Plattenfirma « A Paris » auf, eine sehr persönliche und gelungene Interpretation bekannter Titel der « Chanson française ». Danach kommt « Smile » - eine Produktion, die die französischen Preise « Victoires du Jazz » und Django d’Or » erhält, gefolgt von dem Solo-Album „Mirror“. Reinhard Köchl, Autor des Jazzthing-Magazins, beschreibt es als einen großen Wurf: "Einer, der so eigentlich nur entstehen kann, wenn man das Risiko des bodenlosen Absturzes von der ersten Note an einkalkuliert - hopp oder topp. Terrasson kannte die Gefahr, tat es trotzdem und schuf im Alleingang einen Meilenstein."

Im Laufe seiner Karriere hat Jacky Terrasson den Enthusiasmus seines Publikums immer wieder gewinnen können: mit wichtigen musikalischen Partnern wie Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, Jimmy Scott, Charles Aznavour, Ry Cooder...; durch seine minimalistischen und gleichzeitig dynamischen Kreationen mit dem Schlagzeuger Leon Parker und dem Bassisten Ugonna Okegwo, ein Trio, das in den 90iger Jahren zu den besten zählte; und auch durch seine Intuition für junge Talente, die zu der der Zusammenarbeit mit Eric Harland, Ben Williams, Jamire Williams, Justin Faulkner, um nur einige zu nennen, in verschiedenen Gruppen führte.
Im Februar 2012 unterschreibt Jacky Terrasson einen neuen Vertrag mit Universal Jazz in Frankreich. „Gouache“ seine neue CD für dieses Label, wird im Herbst 2012 veröffentlicht werden. Die Musik zelebriert 20 Jahre einer schon aussergewöhnlichen Karriere. Musikalische Mitarbeiter dieser Produktion sind junge Talente der New Yorker Jazz-Szene wie auch die bekannten französchen Musiker Michel Portal und Stephane Belmondo, sowie der Argentinier Minino Garay und die franco-amerikanische Sängerin Cecile McLorin-Salvant, eine faszinierende Entdeckung.

Jacky Terrasson gibt Konzerte in solo und Trio-Formation auf den grossen Jazz-Festivals (Montreal, San Francisco, Montreux, North Sea Jazz, Marciac) und auch auf den Klavier Festivals wie dem Klavier Ruhr Festival, Lucerne, La Roque d’Anthéron, Piano aux Jacobins… Er spielt regelmässig in Japan, Korea und China, in Europa und in den USA.
Sein ausgereifter Stil wird manchmal mit dem von Bud Powell verglichen, dem er in seinem beeindruckenden und gleichzeitig sorgfältig kontrollierten Tempo ähnelt, auch mit Ahmad Jamal für seinen Raum und Atem; das Erbe von Komponisten wie Ravel, Fauré, Poulenc und Débussy ist auch in seinem Spiel präsent. Witz, Raffinesse und Fantasie sind Worte, die im Zusammenhang mit Jacky Terrasson auch immer wieder auftauchen.

Terrasson inspiriert sich sicher an den grössten Pianisten der Vergangenheit und der Gegenwart – aber sein Stil ist ihm eigen: subtil, basiert auf brillianter Technik und Ausdruck einer immer wieder beeindruckenden Dynamik und einer unerschöpflichen Kreativität.
